Federal Bureau of Prisons – Facility Closures / Operational Changes
While we welcome infrastructure repairs and the BOP’s attempts to fill much needed open positions, this news is unfortunate. These measures negatively impact hundreds of inmates and their families. It will result in overcrowding at dozens of institutions that will remain on mission. This also comes after the Bureau deactivated FCI Terminal Island (a 900-bed medically enhanced facility) last year. All of those inmates were dispatched across the country. Many of them – who were classified “LOW” security ended up in far more challenging MEDIUM security prisons. We also note last year the federal prison camp in Pensacola (a large camp with a sizable RDAP and where inmates could work on the nearby military installation) closed, which significantly crowded many Southeast regional camps. If anyone has questions please contact us.
